Bill Somerville

somerville-mugBill Somerville hasn’t moved around much in life – he’s lived in the same house in Berkeley since he was born. But while he stayed in one place, his ideas grew, flourished and took wing. Along the way, through various philanthropic organizations he founded, Bill Somerville has helped countless thousands of people around the world.

Bill’s approach is stunning in its simplicity and depth: “I find good people, and fund them,” says Somerville. The San Francisco Chronicle put it this way: “When it comes to giving away money, Bill Somerville
doesn’t mess around.”

Bill has an impressive resume: He created California’s first Extended Opportunity Program at UC Berkeley in 1966, founded the acclaimed Wright Institute, was the first Director of the East Bay Community Foundation and positioned his current organization, Philanthropic Ventures, as an innovative foundation focused on “grassroots grant making,” getting immediate help to those who need it – often within 48 hours. Whether someone needs a jacket, emergency dental work, or psychological counseling, Somervillle and Philanthropic Ventures are there to help.

He also developed a successful ”Introduction to Philanthropy” course at Laney to teach non-profits and community organizations how to navigate the foundation world. The course has been picked up by both Stanford University and the University of California.

Bill Somerville’s work has made a real difference at Laney College, providing financial support through the Meng Family Scholarship, the Woodworking Department, the Laney Bistro (formerly the Beginner’s Inn), the World Music Series, the Great Wall Orchestra and many others.

Laney College is proud to recognize Bill Somerville with the Community Service Award.
